Climate Impacts: While changes in invertebrate community composition have been linked to climate change, the mechanisms in which climate warming has affected these populations have not yet been elucidated. It is therefore necessary to identify the influence of climate change on the active hydrological zones of Arctic lakes and ponds.

Locations Methods

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut: Located on the western shores of Hudsons Bay, Rankin Inlet is the second largest city. Sediment cores were extruded from fifteen lakes and ponds July, 2006.

Iqaluit, Nunavut: Located on South Baffin Island, Iqaluit is the capital and largest city. Five lakes were sampled as reference for invertebrate communities. read more

Remote Sensing To aid in a directed sampling of lakes and ponds with perceived climatic impacts, satellite image processing was utilized to identify land cover and hydrological changes during the last two decades.

Biostratigraphy biostratigraphic analysis of sediment cores extracted from sampled lakes will be conducted to determine impacts on invertebrate and algal communities. read more
